Directions (from within Manhattan)

For those of you in Manhattan, here are the directions. Hotel information is further down this page.

By Auto: From the West Side of upper Manhattan, Cooper Union is best reached by driving south on the West Side Highway to 56th Street and continuing south on 12th Avenue (which becomes West Street). At 12th Street, turn left and take 12th Street to Third Avenue. Turn right on Third and drive to Cooper Square, which begins at 7th Street. From the East Side of Manhattan, Cooper Union is best reached by taking the East River Drive to Houston Street. Take Houston Westbound to Bowery. Turn right (north) on Bowery and drive to Cooper Square, which begins at 7th Street. Park in any of the nearby parking garages.

By bus: Take any of the following buses and ask the driver to let you off nearest Astor Place or Cooper Square: The M1 (5th and Madison Avenues), the M15 (First and Second Avenues), the M6 (7th Avenue/Broadway and Avenue of the Americas), the M101 or M102 (Third and Lexington Avenues).

By subway: Take the R or W (BMT Lines) subway to 8th Street, or take the No. 6 (IRT Lexington Avenue Local) to Astor Place.

A Great Location

Cooper Union is located exactly between charming Greenwich Village -- sometimes called the West Village -- and the East Village, which is a very trendy, slightly edgy and artsy up-and-coming neighborhood. It's mid-gentrification.

Both are great for walking and exploring, and easily walkable from each other if you're in a walking mood. This, plus all the other wonderful things to do in NY, may make you want to add a day or two onto your trip to enjoy the city.

Hotels & B&Bs in the Area

We've done extensive research on the internet regarding hotels near the event, by which we mean within ¾ of a mile or under - which means a $10 cab ride (before tip) or less.

Some of the places listed below are just a $5 cab ride, or even within walking distance (although it might be a 20min to 30min walk).

In New York, it's tough to find great or even good rooms for under $300 a night (including taxes). But we tried, and have a number of suggestions below.

We always check the hotels against user reviews on TripAdvisor.com. We recommend you do the same. (That website is a godsend.) We've eliminated all the hotels that received bad reviews on TripAdvisor.com.

If you don't choose one of the hotels listed below, you may find a good, discount hotel a little further away from the event, and the savings might make up for the extra cab fare. Below our recommended hotels is a long list of budget hotels.

NY streets sometimes get traffic jams at the oddest times of day, even on weekends. If your hotel is some distance from the event, factor extra time for your cab ride in case you get caught in traffic.

Of course, you can also take a subway and, if you factor in the extra transit time, the entire city becomes available to you, and many more hotel options. The subways in NY tend to be efficient and often much faster than cabs on the city streets.

Pricing

We found that sometimes hotels had 2 or 3 different prices --

  1. The price when you call for a room.
  2. The price on their own website.
  3. The price you'd get by booking the room through one of the discount travel sites like Expedia, Travelocity, or Hotels.com

Curiously, the travel sites did not always deliver the best prices. Therefore we recommend that you call the hotel first, ask their price, and then check it against the other two pricing sources.

Bed and Breakfasts

A B&B is more like a house, and you're staying in a bedroom. The ones below seem to be, from what we can tell, quite charming. They also tend to be reasonably priced. A few things about the charming B&Bs listed below:

  1. They tend to have very few rooms, and thus fill up fast. If you want to stay at one, don't wait to make a reservation.
  2. You should check out their websites, which is how most prefer you book rooms, although they also welcome phone calls.
  3. Realize you may share a bathroom, but few people seem to complain about this.
  4. Most don't serve breakfast, but are in areas with lots of restaurants that do.
  5. Call to find out if they take credit cards or checks. Some may require cash only.
  6. Some have a requirement of a minimum number of nights stay.
  7. They're privately owned, and the owners may or may not be quirky.
  8. Like hotels, most of these are rated on TripAdvisor.com

To check the distance of these hotels or B&Bs from class (51 Astor Place in New York City), compare them to Cooper Union's location on mapquest

Hotels

Note: Some of these hotels are not large, and they fill up fast too. So if you'll be staying in NY, make your reservation right away. You can usually cancel within 48 hours - call to learn their cancellation policy, as well as for amenities like internet access or safes in the rooms, if you require one.

If you read the reviews on TripAdvisor.com, you'll see they weren't as highly rated as the previous hotels. Yet all were generally reviewed favorably, and you may find one that fits your needs just fine.
